Developing Djenius: the guitar practice app

In my eternal quest to become a gypsy jazz guitar "djenius" (like Django Reinhardt), I am always looking to improve the quality and quantity of my practice. To that end, I created an app tailored to my needs where I record, track, and quantify my practice sessions and progress. This project has taken me many weeks and it's now in what I might call a "functional alpha" stage. Now I'm actively using it for my practice, and soon I'll update whatever functionality needs I find and do a UI overhaul. You can download the APK on this page on my site.

Expanding the website

This website is the project that keeps on giving - I'm always finding new things I want from it. Most recently, I migrated the site over from Replit to GitHub Pages, and I learned to edit it with VS Code and Codex rather than using Replit's agent. Even though it's overwhelmingly vibe coded, I'm still learning a ton about development, and sometimes deep down where no one can see, I imagine myself to be a real developer.

Fallout 4 with the missus

My wife and I used to love watching TV together, but for maybe a year now we've really struggled to find anything we feel is worth the effort of even looking at a screen for an hour. One exception to this has been the Fallout series on Amazon (Vidangel-edited!). Now that she's familiar with the world and lore, I thought maybe we'd try firing up Fallout 4, which I have for PS4. We're so far really enjoying exploring the Commonwealth together - it scratches a similar itch that TV once did (excuse to snuggle on couch after a long day) but feels more interactive.

Perfect pitch training - update!

In my last entry I mentioned that I'm trying to teach my kids perfect pitch with the Clear Pitch app, and that I didn't expect to develop it myself. Well, a few weeks ago, I tested it and I can actually hear and remember some of the chroma of many of the notes!! This is a huge and unexpected development. It's still early stages but I am amazed that I am often able to identify these pitches - I once got 15/16 correct in a row. So I've redoubled my efforts and hope to improve my speed and accuracy over time. I also found a (very) recent study that challenges the idea that you can't develop it outside the critical period. Extremely exciting. (Also, my kids are killing it, and even my wife is starting to hear it - and she's barely even been around when we do the app!)

Niece and nephew song production

For my Christmas present to my siblings this year, I recorded my various nieces and nephews singing various songs and am producing them into professional(ish) sounding tracks. (Last year I did a whole album of songs sung by own kids.) It's fun to do a little recording and mixing again. Someday I might offer this service as part of a business because I think these are such funny and fun momentos of childhood.

Music production plugins

My friend Robert of Lemonbird fame has started a business called Turnt Plugins where he develops and sells plugins, which is starting to gain some traction in the production world. He's open to selling plugins that I make, so that will probably be my next coding project - I have a few ideas for plugins I'd like to try to develop and I'm planning them out in my head right now.

Executive secretary of local Latter-day Saint ward

I'm surprised I haven't mentioned this in previous installments, since it amounts to a good chunk of work every week for me - I am right now acting as the secretary for the Bishop (leader) of our ward (congregation). This is a volunteer (voluntold, actually) position and it's got me creating agendas, coordinating interviews, and attending meetings every week. It's the busiest calling I've had to date, and it's been a pretty interesting experience.

Gaining 5-10 stable pounds of muscle

About three years ago now I started lifting weights and eating so much more food and protein than I could ever want to and I went from a pretty extreme ectomorph body type to gaining about 25-30 pounds. The whole process has changed my life in some fairly dramatic ways - and the work is not done! I am trying to gain around 5 more stable, quality pounds a year for the next few years, which doesn't sound like much but is pretty difficult for me, especially now that I'm out of my newbie gains. While difficult, it's not complicated: it just means pushing it hard in the gym multiple times a week, slamming a double protein shake every day, and eating a lot more than I want to.

Cleaning the kitchen

Given that I spent what feels like a third of my life right now trying to keep our kitchen clean with three kids and an enthusiastic cook for a wife, I thought this bore mention.

Freelance copyediting

I'm doing a freelance editing job for a private company that wants to create a book that tells its history from its founding a few decades ago. One of the co-founders wrote out the significant beats of the story and I'm trying to put it all together in the order that makes the most sense, as well as polishing the copy.

Snuggling my 9-month-old

We are on baby #3 right now and she both has an absurdly pleasant temperament and is at an outrageously adorable stage. Also, this time around I feel less like I'm trying to keep my head above water and more able to float and enjoy the experience. So I'm soaking it up.

Experiments in ambitionlessness

I took about a two-month break from creative projects. It started with feeling psychically drained by the Substack ecosystem. I spent most of that time playing what has become one of my favorite video games, Hades 2, and seeing whether I was okay or even happier setting aside my goals and just wasting my free time on a game for a while. I enjoyed the sabbatical, but I think I'm happier now that I'm writing regularly again.

Updating my website

I let my website stay unchanged for several months-I found it intimidating to go in and edit it. But now that I've let it incubate for a while, I've been overhauling it to better capture what I'm going for. I really love how it has turned out.

Scaffolding a book project

With several months of consistent essay writing under my belt, I'm considering undertaking something longer form. I have a few different ideas, and I'm currently evaluating which I'd like to tackle first.

Formalized family teaching and Family Night

Most of my instruction to my kids is either spontaneous or through passive modeling as I live my life. I think that's normal and good, but I've realized that I want to also have opportunities set aside to teach them things I think are important. So my wife and I have been implementing a practice our church encourages, "Family Night," where you have a weekly lesson and activity with your kids. We all love it!

Perfect pitch training

Perfect pitch is the single thing that I wished for most as a young person. If a genie had appeared to me, I would have used my first wish on perfect pitch without hesitation. I want to help my kids acquire it if possible. The critical period for acquiring it goes to about age seven, and my daughter is five. So we've been using an app called Clear Pitch and practicing together. We're seeing inconsistent but noticeable results in both my oldest daughter and my son. I'd like to keep working on this regularly.

Family council

I decided to start a weekly meeting with my wife where we talk through the logistics of our week and divide up anything that needs to be dealt with. We've long done "companionship inventory," a practice I picked up on my mission, but that's an assessment of our relationship health rather than a logistical meeting. Both are very helpful for us.

Building a house

This has been ongoing for a long time, but we're building a house in the Baltimore area, which involves a lot of decisions and coordination and meetings. We're hoping to break ground in the next few months.

Remixing and releasing music I've sat on for way too long

I have several songs I've produced that are right at the finish line of release. Unfortunately, the closer that gets, the harder it is to feel like the thing is done. In particular, I endlessly second guess myself on my mixes. But I'm hoping to finish some of these up and release them soon.

Build my website

I'm learning how to use AI tools to build my own website, instead of using something like Squarespace. It's amazing how much it will do for you, and also amazing how much there is still to learn and do.

The Fare Well Files

This is my current baby. I'm about five months in and still just so energized by the process of writing essays. It takes most of my creative time, and I wish I had a lot more. I try to also be very active on Substack Notes to maintain visibility and make connections with people.

Produce consistent gypsy jazz content

After a long gestation period, I recently created a full gypsy jazz persona online, under the artist name "Jordan Michael Call." I'm trying to post performances regularly on Instagram, as well as record/produce/release roughly one single a month. This gives me lots to practice and work on.

Teaching my daughter to swim

This has been SO fun. My five-year-old is working on earning her "yellow necklace" at the local pool, and she can do half of the requirements. We need to get her treading water next. I try to get her in a pool as much as I can.

Learning about cars with my son

My three-year-old is obsessed with cars. I'm not mechanically-minded at all, but I love the idea of learning about it someday. I want to rebuild a '65 Mustang with him, like the one we saw at the gym parking lot the other day. So I had ChatGPT build me a college course in restoring cars. Slightly overwhelming but fascinating stuff.

Reducing screen time

I installed a widget that narcs on me for how much I've looked at my phone, and then I bought a smart watch so I wouldn't be so reliant on my phone for calls and texts. I've cut my phone time down by several hours a day.

Make Boba Milk drinks

I bought bubbles and huge straws from Amazon and figured out how to make a brown sugar syrup. Just did my first one and it turned out incredible.
